A dog’s colour perception

I noticed that sometimes my dog would run right by the ball I threw for her that had landed in the grass. Why, I asked myself, can’t she see it? – it’s THERE in bright greeny-yellow!

So this is why …

Dogs have fewer of the type of cells called cones in their eyes than people. Cones are responsible for colour perception. Dogs CAN see colors, just not as many as we can.

Why is this important for us? When you are buying the next toy for your dog to play with in the park, orange and yellow toys are hard to see – they meld with the color of the grass. Blue toys are best on the field. And if you want something to throw into the air – like a Frisbee – yellow or orange will appear more visible against the sky.
